INTRODUCING: Barbara Montero and the problem with “automatic” expert action

Is expert action automatic?  Many assume that top athletes and musicians perform best in a “zen-like” state, that is one without thought or reflection.   Barbara Montero, who was a professional ballerina before coming to philosophy, argues that deliberation may indeed play an important part in expert action.

Barbara Montero is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the College of Staten Island and the CUNY Graduate Center .
