What sort of measurable effects does meditation have on the brain? Carrisa Véliz is interested in exploring how meditation practitioners might be useful to expanding the experimental possibilities of neuroscience. Most experiments in this field rely on technical images and data rather than subjective experience. However, science has shown that those who have meditated more than 10,000 hours can accurately detect changes in their mental state. By incorporating such “dependable” subjective experience into experiments and developing a formalized language to discuss this experience, both philosophy and neuroscience might broaden their vision of the human mind.
